Excel encounter history

questions concerning analysis/theory using program MARK

Excel encounter history

Postby Simon_123 » Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:52 pm

I hope this question isn't too trivial for this forum but I'm trying to get my data into the correct encounter history format to input into MARK. However I'm not sure how to convert the data in excel into the correct format.

My data is formed of ringed birds set out in three columns ring number, date and whether the bird is a retrap/new/control.

Are there any macros/formulas that anyones knows of to help me with this problem? Or are there any websites that might be helpful in guiding me through how to do it for myself?

Thanks,

Simon

I don't use Excel (for anything), but in general, most people enter their data in Excel (or some other tabular format) using a vertical array - each line has a record for a given encounter for a given marked individual. What you want to do is transpose (and thats the key word here) from a vertical array to a horizontal array. I'm pretty sure you can do this in Excel - perhaps one of the Excel users out there can advise.

I use SAS or MATLAB (or, increasingliung, [R]) to accomplish this task.
