questions concerning analysis/theory using program MARK

Batch Mode

Postby Patrick Devers » Wed Oct 22, 2003 10:16 am

I have a large data set (>2000 individuals across 6 years and 12 study sites) and I am having trouble running models with weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly time intervals using the entire 6-year data set.. I am using the KNOWN FATES model, but MARK crashes when I attempt to run the entire 6-year data set. I have been told that I will probably be able to run the 6-year data set in Batch Mode, but I have not been able to find information on how to use the batch mode either in the on-line book or in previous messages. Can someone provide me with a place to start on running MARK in batch mode? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Pat

You can run MARK in batch mode at a command line in DOS or in a batch file you can type the following (notice the DOS name for the path):
C:\Progra~1\MARK\Mark i=Model.inp o=Model.out.
Its easiest to do this in a text editor and save it as a *.bat file. In this case, the batch file and inp file will need to be in the same directory using the above syntax or you can specify a path.

The input file format can be gleaned from a MARK run itself. Its the stuff that scrolls by in the black window when you run MARK the normal way. I usually run an encounter file in MARK the normal way to the point where it asks me whether I want to paste the results. Ignore that question. At this point, there will be some temporary files on your hard drive where the input file sits. Take the *y.tmp file and save it as your Model.inp file. You'll have to delete out all of the lines that do not have 'INPUT --- ' at the beginning (or comment them out). Then, delete the 'INPUT --- ' text off of the remaining lines keeping all of the remaining text on each line which give instructions to MARK. If you took care of all of the details, it should now be a legitimate MARK batch file that can run per above instructions.

An easier way to get the input file is to build the model, then click 'Save current model structure' under the 'Run' menu. This will add a model to the results browser which you can select then view using the button next to the trash button. Once in notepad, save the file. No modifications to the file are necessary.
