nest survival, dead hen.....

Postby novice » Thu May 06, 2010 6:41 pm

scenario...

a galliform nest is found on day 50 and is in the egg laying stage.

Nest is still alive on day 54

Nest is still alive on day 56...but the radiomarked hen was killed on day 55 or 56 away from the nest.

The nest will obviously not be successfull, but was not depredated either. The nest survived both intervals, but the hen did not. How would this be treated in MARK.

How would this data be handled for a non radiomarked animal? The observer would not know if the nest was abondoned or if the hen was killed.

Thanks for any help you may have.

Aren't galliformes fun...

AFAICT, there is no way to treat this specifically in MARK's nest survival method (although I may have missed a paper somewhere). We have had this happen a few times on turkeys down here, I think from a common sense standpoint you would use the last day the nest was found alive, and you knew the hen was alive (54 I think). It is similar to abandonment of a nest, we usually use the last day the hen was there because after that the nest is almost always destined to fail.
