What does Huggins do with ind cov. in models not using them?

Please help me to understand these different N-hat results in Huggins between including individual covariates, and not including individual covariates in a dataset and running a model that doesn't even use covariates.

THE DETAILS
1. Using Huggins Closed Captures for two duplicate datasets (below), except one dataset (a.) has time-of-day coded as six different time periods and the other (b.) doesn't include this information.

2. I have created two Mark results files. In (a.) I use 4 encounter occasions, 7 attribute groups, and 6 individual covariates. For (b.) I use 4 encounter occasions and 7 attribute groups.

3. As a test, I run both of these using a Pre-defined model: {p(.) c(t) PIM}. I have other more complicated models, but the results are similar to this where I get Derived results of:

4. Why are these results so different!? It would seem that I am not even modeling covariates with the {p(.) c(t) PIM} model.

Whenever there are are differences like this where the datasets are purported to be 'the same' (as in this case, where the only difference is claimed to be whether or not the covariates are used in the analysis), you can usually bet that the datasets being contrasted are not, in fact, the same. This seems to be the case here. There are 7 attribute groups for these data. So, in the .inp file, there would be seven columns - each row would consist of 0's in all the columns except the column specifying the attribute group (we're talking individual covariates here, so 0's and 1's).

Here, the attribute columns are to the right of the covariates, as far as I can tell, and there is a 1 in the first column after the encounter histories for every history, which makes no sense. I assume the columns right after the encounter histories are all binary, but I'm not sure - guessing.

Regardless - if I'm correct that the covariates are entered before the attribute groups in the encounter history, then this is part of the problem - try switching them:

encounter history -> attribute columns -> covariates

If in fact it is in that ordering already, then the problem is the way the coding is handled for the attributes - since there is more than a single 1 per row for the columns coding the attribute groups.

Thank you very much for the help.

Reordering things so that encounter history was first, the 7 attribute groups were next, the frequency column (1 for each individual) was third, and the 6 individual covariates was last made it so that my results matched with when I run a Huggins model without individual covariates.

Just a suggestion, perhaps this ordering information (for when you have both groups and ind. covariates) could be added to the Gentle Guide, because I did not see it in there anywhere.

My guess is that Evan is about to reply with RTFM (not sure though never having RTFM myself), but this is certainly covered in the help file. I've had to look there a couple of times myself to get reminded.

Indeed. But, I suppose I could add a more explicit example in Chapter 2. I have a multiple attribute example with no covariates, and a multiple covariates but only one attribute group example, but not one that had multiple attribute groups and multiple covariates. I more or less assumed it would be self-evident from the preceding two scenarios, but I guess not. Not a big deal. I'll put it on the todo list.
