Postdoctoral Associate in Quantitative and/or Movement Ecology at North Carolina State University

Title: Red Snapper Movement and Abundance

Position Description: The Postdoctoral Associate will be supervised by Drs. Nathan Hostetter (USGS NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit) and Krishna Pacifici (NC State University) and work with a team of researchers at NC State University (Dr. Jeff Buckel), NOAA (Drs. Nate Bacheler and Kyle Shertzer), University of Florida (Dr. Will Patterson), and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (David Portnoy) to quantify movement and abundance of red snappers in US Atlantic waters. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Associate will 1) quantify Red Snapper movement using multiple data sources collected in NC and FL (e.g., acoustic telemetry, mark-recapture), 2) develop methods to estimate abundance by integrating count data (e.g., paired/trap video and Remotely Operated Vehicles) and movement data, and 3) work with collaborators to compare abundance estimates to complementary Close-Kin Mark-Recapture (CKMR) analyses and stock assessments. The postdoc will participate in all aspects of research activities, have opportunities to participate in field research, and flexibility to develop their own research ideas.

Start date: September - December, 2023 (start date is flexible during the fall of 2023)

Duration: 2 years

Salary: $65,000/year plus benefits (health insurance)

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina, USA (remote option available)

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in fisheries, wildlife, statistics, quantitative ecology, or related fields.

2. Knowledge of GIS/geospatial analysis in R, statistics, and modeling with special emphasis on spatial and Bayesian hierarchical modeling.

3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

4. Ability to work in an interdisciplinary research group.

5. Commitment to maintaining an inclusive work environment.

Highly Desirable:

1. Record of peer-reviewed publications

2. Proficiency with hierarchical modeling and data-integration either through existing software (JAGS/Nimble/Stan/TMB) or customizable methods

3. Spatial modeling experience (e.g., Spatial statistics, Spatial Capture-Recapture, Movement analyses)

4. Experience working with and managing large heterogeneous data sets
