MARK Novice - Error Message Example Dipper Data

Postby BillyMills » Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:16 am

I am using program MARK for the first time as part of my M.Sc. thesis. I have begun by attempting to work through the gentle introduction . . .

Using the data provided on the same website as the software download (Dipper - Males Only) I have followed the online instructions exactly as stated (so many times now!). However, when I attempt to do a 'run' I get the same error message:

Any ideas on why this could be? Presumably not an issue with the INP file as that has been provided.

Sorry for the novice question . . .

God place to start (although I'm somewhat biased...)

Good on you for at least finding the input file. ed_males.inp, right?

[Assuming you're using ed_males.inp, problem is *not* the data file.]

Short of seeing exactly what you're doing, its hard to say. An error involving a .tmp file can be any one of a number of things, including something about how your computer is networked (your computer, or a networked 'shared' machine? If the later, there are occasional permission issues which need to be resolved).

Only thing to suggest at this point is

1\ turn off MARK, and manually delete any .tmp files that might linger on your desktop (MARK normally deletes things when it shuts down, but sometimes things happen).

2\ create a folder on the Desktop called 'dipper' (or some such). Move the ed_males.inp file into this new folder

3\ retry your attempts there.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply!

There were no .tmp files to remove. I did, however, create the new folder and have another go. Unfortunately I got the same error message.

I am using MARK on a shared computer network in our department, I had to have administrator permission to download the program. Perhaps the issue does lie there.

As any omnipotent list moderator should be :D

Actually, we had this issue on a computer in the lab a while back (it was trying to pull in a .doc temp file).

It is tied to some administrative level restrictions on the computer/network we were using. You will need to get your IT folks involved and save yourself the headaches.

To test if it's a network problem, copy the inp file to a flash drive, then run MARK on that file.
