Calculating CV for POPAN abundance and derived abundance

Postby aber_r16 » Thu Jun 09, 2016 1:53 pm

HI,

I would like to confirm I am calculating the CV of my POPAN super population estimate and derived annual estimates correctly!

CV = estimate/standard error

Is this correct? Thanks in advance, Robin

Nope. It is std error/estimate. You have it flipped. What you gave is a "z-test statistic" that the coefficient is different from 0. (estimate-0)/std error

Thanks Jeff!

I went back into my code,and in fact, I wrote in upside down in my post! so in the end I did do it right! Awesome to have the confirmation that this is indeed correct!

While I have your attention, is it correct to calculate this CV both for the super population and the derived annual estimates?

For my derived values I am getting CVs ranging from .13 to .44, but for the overall super population I get a CV of .06 which seems unreasonibly good when the CVs of the derived are higher?

Thoughts? Robin

I'd expect cv for super-population size to be less than individual estimates by time but you may want to check examples in C&W chapter on Jolly-Seber.
