performing random effects models

HI all,

I would like to use random effects models in MARK but I don't really know if I am doing it properly. I am following (I think) the steps in Appendix D.
So, I go for "user specified" and then I put the values of my continuous variable (e.g., snow depth or food abundance index or population density) in the design matrix (before, I specified how many columns and so on).
Then when I add the results to the browser, the random effects models fall under fixed effects. In this case, can I say that random effects models do not improve the fit?

Given the question, I would suggest you read Chapter 4 carefully (especially sections on model selection).
