Occupancy encounter history error

Postby Pavlacky » Mon Aug 17, 2009 5:23 pm

Hello all,

I am running an occupancy estimation model in MARK using an encounter history with 16 occasions and one group.

....00..00000000 1;

When I run a model I get the following error message:

The character 'ÿ' was found in the encounter history.
ERROR -- Encounter history must consist of only these characters: '12.0'

The inp file was created in Notepad (Windows xp). I checked the file thoroughly using Notepad++ and WORD to reveal formatting, but found no errors.

Can you help me get to the bottom of the error message?

Any help or guidence you provide will be greatly appreciated,

David:
Open up the file in WordPad, and check it. Then, save the file as a
Text Document MS DOS format
and I think you will be rid of the extraneous characters.

David:
One other thing to look out for -- be sure you have actually replaced your original ".inp" file. WordPad will wan to save the file with a ".txt" extension, and not actually replace the .inp file.

In other words, check the file date and time, and turn off Window Explorer's option to hide file extensions. You want to be able to see file extensions.

In addition to Gary's suggestions, here's another: dump WordPad, or anything posing as an editor that was created by Microsoft. Simply get yourself a real, decent, and free editor, and associate .inp files with it. There are a large number of very good ones out there. For example

http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html

or

http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

or

http://www.jedit.org/

Any of these are better options for editing .inp files than Notepad or Wordpad. I generally tell people to find a decent editor, and learn to use it. One that makes finding, search and replace, regular expressions and related actions easy is worth learning.

Gary and Evan,

Thank you for your suggestions. That was an oversight on my part. Everything is humming along now.

Best,
