Post Doctoral position - mark recapture modeling of cod and lobster demography: effects of selective harvesting and marine protected areas.
The Institute of Marine Research has a two-year Post Doctoral position available in the Population Genetics and Ecology research group in Flødevigen, Arendal, Norway.
The position will be part of the project PROMAR – Understanding fitness effects of harvesting and protection of coastal marine resources. This project aims to integrate research on marine protected areas with research on fisheries-induced selection. A key approach will be to use marine reserves as full-scale field experiments for understanding the selective impact of harvesting, in comparison to natural agents of selection.
Together with members of the research team, the appointee will have responsibility for analyzing mark-recapture data on coastal cod and lobster from inside and outside marine protected areas in Skagerrak, southern Norway. Specifically, one aim is to estimate survival rates of phenotypes (size-groups) exposed to coastal recreational and commercial fishing, in comparison to survival of phenotypes living within marine protected areas with limited or no harvesting.
We wish to appoint a highly motivated person with a PhD involving experience with mark recapture modeling, marine ecology or evolutionary ecology. The appointee will need to be able to document experience of statistical modeling of ecological field-data. In particular, experience with capture-recapture analyses is considered advantageous. A record of publishing in this field will be considered and advantage. Within the position there will be opportunity to participate in ongoing field research and data collection relevant to the assigned tasks.
The Institute emphasizes personal qualities such as good communication and cooperative skills, the ability to work independently and as part of an active research team.
We offer:
• a positive, challenging and creative work environment
• the opportunity to work in a national institute with a high level of international contact
• flexible hours, a good pension scheme and a wide range of welfare services.
The Institute offers governmental regulated salaries as post doctor (code 1352).
