Quantitative Scientist

The Fish Passage Center in Portland, OR seeks a quantitative fisheries scientist or biometrician to conduct work related to the Comparative Survival Study and Smolt Monitor Project (a 10-year retrospective CSS report can be found here: http://www.fpc.org/documents/CSS/FINAL%20COMPLETE%2010%20YEAR%20CSS%20REPORT-8-31-07withfrontpage.pdf). Both projects have been in existence for more than 14 years and a long-term PIT tag dataset exists. These projects are continuing to evolve as regional monitoring needs change over the years and a flexible open-minded approach is desired. Some specific objectives are to (1) further develop statistical models using Mark-Recapture data primarily from PIT-tags expressing survival across the entire Salmon life-cycle (juvenile survival, returning adult success, differential survival across study groups, ocean survival, etc) (2) couple these survival models with environmental and management influenced factors (3) further develop and expand the long-term datasets that have been established in these studies. The appointee will work with scientists from state, tribal, and federal agencies to guide study design, compile appropriate data, and to develop and evaluate various models. Results will be submitted as reports and, in some cases, as peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented at regional meetings. Results will contribute to the conservation and management of EPA listed and unlisted salmon and steelhead stocks towards regional monitoring of these species throughout the Columbia and Snake River Basins.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Strong quantitative and communication skills. Experience in mark recapture and generalized linear modeling with the Mark Program, or other software. An understanding of bootstrap methods. Competence with programming environments (R, MS SQL), and databases is desired but not required at the entry level. Abilities to work independently and as part of a team, strong communication and interpersonal skills.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Full time with paid vacation, medical/dental benefits and retirement benefits.

POSITION START DATE: As soon as possible after close of search
