black-backed woodpecker post-doc

Post-doctoral research position: Ecology, monitoring and management of Black-backed Woodpecker and other bird species occupying recent fire areas in the Sierra Nevada. The Institute for Bird Populations (http://www.birdpop.org) in Point Reyes Station, CA, has a post-doctoral opening available beginning January 2011. The selected candidate will join a research team to analyze and publish results from ongoing monitoring and research into the ecology, habitat relationships, and population trends of Black-backed Woodpecker and other bird species occupying recent fire areas in the Sierra Nevada. Requirements for the position include (1) a Ph.D. in ecology, statistics or related field, (2) proficiency with statistical methods including occupancy models, hierarchical models, Bayesian analysis, mark-recapture models, and the analysis of radio-telemetry data to estimate home ranges and resource selection functions, (3) computer programming proficiency with software such as R and WinBUGS, (4) GIS experience, (5) interest in fire ecology and forest management issues, and (6) capacity to work productively and thrive as part of a small but congenial workgroup. The starting salary will be $39-42K per year with excellent benefits. Funding is available for one year, with possible extension and opportunities for new project development. Part-time and/or telecommuting arrangements may also be considered.
