Having problems with U-CARE

Postby Luke » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:47 pm

Hello,
I'm having some difficulties trying to get U-CARE to work. I'm running Vista on my PC and followed (I thought) all of the directions I could find. Basically, whenever I try to either load a capture history file or verify one (in MARK format), the program crashes out with a message in the DOS window that disappears to quickly to read. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the program, but the same thing happens. I've also tried several versions that, based on descriptions, should work on Vista. I've also tried several capture history files that work in MARK that I looked through to make sure there were no inappropriate characters and even made a new file from scratch in a text editing program (jEdit) that definitely had nothing but 1's, 0's, and ;'s. Regardless of the file, the same thing described above happens. Furthermore, I was sure to execute installation as an administrator. I also checked the PATH variable and it looked like this:
C:\Program Files\MATLAB\MATLAB Compiler Runtime\v711\runtime\win32

Based on what I could find about this issue and my limited knowledge of coding, everything looks fine. Before trying something very different I had a few questions.
1) I did not previously have Mathlab on my computer. I've downloaded the libraries appropriate to each version of U-CARE (currently trying to get 7.9 to work and the U-CARE version listed under it on the CEFE page) and made sure to unistall earlier versions prior to installing a newer library version. Is the entire program (Mathlab) necessary to get U-CARE to work and is the solution to my problem as simple as getting the entire program?
2) I was trying to run U-CARE with a .inp file that was known to work, like the ED.inp file mentioned in the U-CARE manual. The manual says that this file is included in the download, but I've checked the file that gets added to my computer when installing U-CARE and can't find it. I've also had my computer search through its entire hard drive with no success. Finally, I've looked under the software section on the CEFE website, but am unable to find anything that looks like the structure of a MARK capture history file. Am I looking in the wrong place? If so, where can find the dipper file that is often mentioned?

I'm sure there is an easy solution to my problem and I will kick myself for not figuring it out, but believe me, I've tried everything I could think of over the last several weeks to make this work. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

It seems like lots of people have trouble getting the UCARE-Matlab marriage to work on Windows. I've been wondering for a while if there was any plan to implement the tools in UCARE (or at least the main goodness-of-fit ones) in an R package to make things simpler?

Hello,
Concerning
1) I did not previously have Mathlab on my computer. I've downloaded the libraries appropriate to each version of U-CARE (currently trying to get 7.9 to work and the U-CARE version listed under it on the CEFE page) and made sure to unistall earlier versions prior to installing a newer library version. Is the entire program (Mathlab) necessary to get U-CARE to work and is the solution to my problem as simple as getting the entire program?

You need the libraries from Matlab to be able to run U-CARE, not MATLAB which is not free.

I'm not sure I can distribute the file ed.inp, use instead the following simulated data file:

Remi,
Thank you for your reply and sending me that simulation file. I tried it, and am very happy to say that it worked without a problem. I compared it with my files and noted that I was not properly including a space between the last character in a line and the ;. After modifying my file, it also works. I feel a little silly for such a dumb mistake, but with this figured out I can finish one of the last little bits of my dissertation that need to be done. Again, thank you so much.
Sincerely,
