Adaptive cluster sampling

Postby danimal » Sat Dec 07, 2013 4:15 pm

Hello,

I am curious if anyone can steer me in any direction with the topic of adaptive cluster sampling for examining occupancy. I am particularly interested in any research that has been peer-reviewed that has applied this frame-work. I also invite scientific opinion for applying these types of designs in an occupancy study. Clearly "controlling for imperfect detection" has a new meaning if you are using detection to inform future sample locations.

Dear Danimal
MacKenzie & Royle 2005 J Appl Ecol 42:1105-1114 mention adaptive sampling and double sampling, but are not enthusiastic. Conroy et al 2008 Ecology 89: 3362-3370 use occupancy as a first phase in an adaptive sampling design. I advise you to think hard about what you want to measure, especially in relation to the scale of home-range movements (Efford & Dawson 2012 Ecosphere 3:32).

This paper may also be useful: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1 ... 201.x/full. I haven't read it myself but based on discussions I've had previously with one of the authors I think it's a similar situation to adpative cluster sampling (but I could be wrong).

As you note, with adaptive cluster sampling detection now influences which set of units actually get surveyed which you need to account for when extrapolating your results to the entire population of interest. How big of an issue it might be I don't honestly know and am not aware of anyone that has looked into it.
