spatial correlation

Hi, I`m master student in INPA, Amazonas, Brazil. My thesis is about the quantification of occurrence on common and rare birds from Terra-firme in Amazonian pristine forest, near Manaus city. I`m testing if some birds that are called rare in this region are really rare or are just difficult to detected. For this work, rare birds should have smaller occurrence than common birds from same genus. I`m interest in modeling my data with the new option of spatial correlation. Are there some guidelines for use this new option? Someone can help me a little? I try some examples but I’m not sure about the results.
