Robust design error

Postby apryle » Mon Mar 21, 2016 11:18 pm

When I try to use the sample dataset rd_simple.inp per section 15.6.1. of the book, I keep getting an error when I click on the button "Easy Robust Design Times" and enter 5 as the number of primary occasions. The error message is...

"Number of primary occasions >= Total Number of Occasions Specified

I am attempting to follow the book step by step and I'm unsure why this error is occurring. Any ideas on how to move past this very basic step is appreciated. Thanks!

Sample data from:
http://www.montana.edu/rotella/document ... imple1.inp
copied and pasted into a text document and saved as .inp file.

One possible clue is last part -- 'cut and pasted' and saved as .inp file. My guess is you copied and pasted into Word, and then tried to save as an .inp file. That might be part of the problem. See item 9(b) of the MARK FAQ, which can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=9

Second, there is no reason to do a cut and paste from Jay's site. All of the examples used in the book are available in separate .inp files, in a single .zip archive - again, see MARK FAQ item 7(c). Here is a direct link: http://www.phidot.org/software/mark/doc ... rkdata.zip

Finally, for that data set, you first need to tell MARK you have 15 total sampling occasions, which you then 'partition' over a set of primary occasions using the 'Easy Robust Design' button. Beyond problems with the .inp file, you might have forgotten to set it to 15 occasions (which would also lead to that error message).

Given the basic challenges you're having (this, and other threads), I would guess you're completely new to all this. As such, you are urged -- strongly -- to work through chapters 1 -> 7, 10, and 14, before jumping into the robust design chapter (even if your report/thesis/project is due soon). Working with RD models will be difficult without a solid grounding in the various concepts, and mechanics, that you'll need.

I figured out what I was doing wrong - I was importing the data file BEFORE choosing the model. You have to choose the model, THEN import the data file. The notepad .inp file I created worked fine once I did it in the correct steps.
