Error-- Encounter histories was too short...

Postby dyanna » Mon Jul 28, 2014 2:26 pm

Greetings all,

I am new to this software and trying to analyse my data on resident turtles from 2 islands. I would like to estimate the population size of each species (2 species in each island) and also the population growth (lambda) of the turtle population in these areas. Basically below is my data from 8 sampling occasions with 2 months time interval for each sampling;

island A - green turtle (total captured=147, recaptured=27)
-hawksbill turtle (total captured=13, recaptured= 2)

island B - green turtle (total captured=512, recaptured=104)
-hawksbill turtle (total captured=34, recaptured=12)

I've tried to run the POPAN formulation for green turtle (Island A) where I categorized my data into 2 groups (size classes).

/*470*/10000100 100 1;
/*40539*/10000000 100 1;

*100=1st group
010 = 2nd group

But an error report show up --- encounter history was to short for the numbers of occasions specified...

any advice? I really appreciate any kind of advice and help.

Thank you

I created an input file with just those 2 lines that you provided and it worked. Did you change the number of sampling occasions and the number of groups when setting up the new analysis? Also, so I better understand your problem, do you have 100 individuals in group 1 and 1 individual in group 2 with each of those encounter histories?

I am also not sure what you mean by,

*100=1st group
010 = 2nd group

The column in the input file for group 1 should be the number of individuals in that group with that encounter history, and the same for group 2's column.

Please do have a careful read of chapter 2 in the MARK book:

http://www.phidot.org/software/mark/doc ... /chap2.pdf

In particular, section 2.1

Thank you for the replies.

I know already what is wrong with my data.
