If there is a known number of tagging/ recapturing occasions, at what point is it advisable to cease applying new tags and focus all of our effort on recapturing previously tagged individuals? In other words, do encounter histories such as
011
or
010
provide additional information about survival rate or resighting probability?
Our particular situation:
We want to estimate size-specific survival rates in a trout population over the course of a summer, and we will be tagging/ recapturing fish on four occasions separated by five-week intervals. Applying the PIT tags requires anesthetizing the fish and injecting the tags, which takes considerably more time than simply scanning for previously injected tags; i.e., we will process more fish if we focus on only scanning for previously injected tags.
Thanks in advance,
Kristian
