sample size -- planning stage

How does one determine how many animals need to be marked in the planning stage of a study? I will be able to make reasonable guesses of survival and detection probabilities, and I know the number of groups whose survival I want to compare.

Direction to published articles/ chapters or simulation capabilities of MARK will be appreciated.

The sample sizes will depend on the question you are trying to address. If you can relate your question to coef. of variation of survival or capture probability, then program CAPQUOTA might be of use. You can find it at:
