Huggins model applied to 2 event closed mark-recap

Postby llbeattie » Fri Dec 04, 2009 11:11 am

Good Morning;
Can the Huggins model be applied in a 2 event closed mark recapture situation? I have never read specifically that it cannot but I have also never seen any specific examples of 2 event experiments using the Huggins model.
I am interested in only one covariate, fish length.
The 2 events use different capture methods so I would expect a time component as well, ie model Mth.
Thanks so much,
Lisa Beattie

Huggins model applied to 2 event closed mark-recap Message

Lisa:
Yes, the Huggins model can be used for only 2 occasions. In fact, the 2-occasion Huggins estimator is exactly the Lincoln-Petersen estimator (meaning that the full likelihood estimator is not exactly the Lincoln-Petersen estimator).

So, you can use individual covariates in the 2-occasion Huggins estimator to try to handle individual heterogeneity. But, you won't be able to do Pledger estimator.

Lisa,
I did something like what I think you are interested in using Huggins model with 2 occasions each with a different capture method. See Journal of Wildlife Management 71(1) 277-281, maybe it will help you out.
