Incorporating Neck band loss in models

Postby ppistorius » Mon Jul 19, 2004 4:11 am

I am working with Norwegian greylag geese populations and am modelling survival over different hunting regimes. In order to this I need to incorporate annual neck band loss (about 2% annually) into the models. Can someone please point me to appropriate literature explaining how to do so, or give me some advice.
Thanks
Pierre

collar loss

If it is possible to sample individuals that have leg bands but not neck collars (through recapture or hunter recovery, say) from the same popualtion, then you can use a model (and software) that will likely appear in the next issue of Biometrics (Conn et al.). If you don't have this type of data, you might look at doing something more ad hoc. Check out 2 articles by JD Nichols and JE Hines that came out in the early 90's... one of which is on collar loss in swans (in JWM I think).
