First steps in using Program MARK...

Postby Marshall » Fri Feb 05, 2010 3:14 pm

Hello,

I am a new user learning program Mark. I am reading through the "gentle introduction"; and using Mark 6.0. I am having trouble completing the task 3.4. I have done all of the steps up until clicking the "OK to run" button from the run window. When I click on "OK to run" a small window appears titled: Info. Saying: Use an identity design matrix since none was specified? YES/NO

I have tried clicking YES, resulting in ERROR Code 4 [ ]

NO, resulting in no output produced.

In the Design pull-down menu I have:
1) Selected Full-Run,run -- Sin link function is not able to be selected
2)Selected Identity-Run, run -- Error Code 4 [ ] IGNORE/ABORT click ignore, Error window: Error opening file mrk3878y.tmp OK, ERROR MODEL: Could not parse output properly in file mrk3878y.tmp for model

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the forum. For these sorts of issues, we need to know a few things in order to help:

1. when you say task 3.4, what are you referring to? A section in chapter 3? Be as specific as possible (page number, sample data set), etc.

2. you mention MARK 6.0. Good - knowing the version always helps. But, we also need to know something about the compute environment (what version of Windows, for example).

3. if you're just working through chapter 3 at this point - stay away from any of the design matrix menus. In fact, stay away from any menus. Chapter 3 is a simple stroll through a very basic introductory analysis.

All of the examples in the 'gentle guide' have been tested thoroughly - 100% of them for MARK 5.x, and an increasing fraction for MARK 6.0 as well. And, chapter 3 works with the 'dipper data', which is so well-tested some people can almost recite individual encounter histories (not me, of course).

So, chances are pretty good its some sort of 'error at your end'. The various error messages about .tmp files are consistent with this.

I am using Windows XP
I am referring to the dipper "males only" data, chapter 3, at the end of page 54.

I can make it as far as the end of page 54, however when I click on -OK to Run, a window titled INFO says: Use an identity design matrix since none was specified? YES/NO

That is normal. The default DM for MARK is the identity matrix - for reasons which will be come apparent when you work through chapter 6 (the long chapter on linear models). For the models you're working with in Chapter 3, the identity matrix is what you want to use.

Now, having said that, clicking 'yes' to the query about whether or not you want to use the identity matrix should *not* cause any problems. Try the following.

1. go into whatever directory you placed the ed_males.inp file (i.e., where you're working with MARK).

2. if there are any files ending with .tmp, delete them.

3. then, try again.

Thank you very much for the quick response. That was the issue, and things are now working fine.
