mark-recapture with "Small Quadrats" data?

Postby jlehmkuhl » Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:57 pm

Is anyone familiar with mark-recapture analysis of small mammal live-trapping data collected from "Small Quadrats" used extensively in Scandinavia for the last 25+ years? Small Quadrats are a 15m x 15m rectangle with 12 traps positioned evenly along the perimeter. It seems in the past that authors simply used captures/100 trap nights etc as an index. I have a paper that does extensive analysis with MARK of multiple-capture live-trap data, and I am not sure how well such a trapping design would work with mark-recapture. Traps are few. captures are low, each trap has much edge to sample, and they used multiple-capture Ugglan traps. Comments?

These data are well-suited to spatially explicit capture-recapture, which should take care of the large edge effects. See for example www.otago.ac.nz/density and publications listed there.
