Mass mark-recapture data?

Postby nd » Thu Mar 12, 2009 4:54 pm

I had a question about if my data is appropriate for any of the models available in MARK. I have read through the ‘gentle introduction’ to MARK and the only model that seems possible to look at with this data is the mark-resight model with dead recoveries. I am conducting a mass mark-recapture study (VIE tags) on a small bodied, nongame fish to address a question about the movement patterns of the fish. The size of the fish along with other factors in my study precluded me from giving individual marks and left me with giving batch marks (based on cohort and sampling patch).

I have no way of knowing exactly how many individuals of my marked population are available for recapture at any given sampling event (sampling intervals are open; 1-2 months between each; VIE tags) So that takes out the emigration mixed logit normal resight model.

So onto the mark-resight with dead recoveries. When resighted the individuals are in fact alive and are returned to the stream after the information is gained from them. With that said the recapture rate is low (8-10%) so the chances of multiple recaptures would be low. I realize this is quite a stretch from dead recoveries which is why I pose the question to ya’ll.

Is there any other model in MARK or elsewhere that anyone would suggest I look into more deeply. I would appreciate any feedback.
I am anticipating at the end of the study I will have marked ~1000 individuals and will have ~100 recaptures. I have 9 sampling cohorts and ~20 sampling locations.
Thanks for your help,
Nate
